GREETING TO THE CONFERENCE: NOAM CHOMSKY

noviembre 10, 2007

Here’s the transcript for those interested, of a video of Chomsky, presented at the indigenous congress in Oaxaca, and alluded to in my write-up –some inaccuracies in my translation are cleared up –nothing too serious, but still, here it is.
Chomsky gave an hour-long interview at that time, so we may be lucky enough to get it in its entirety, this is only a small part.

Protest at Mexican Governors’ Conference in Dallas

agosto 30, 2007

On Sunday, August 19th a group of protesters from Dallas, Austin andHouston gathered to demonstrate against the presence of representatives of Oaxacan Governor Ulises Ruiz at a meeting of the CONAGO–the National Conference of Governors–in Dallas. Approximately 25 people from around Texas converged on the Ramada Inn in Dallas, Texas to confront a gathering of governors from three Mexican States. There had been rumors that Ulises Ruiz, governor of Oaxaca, would be present, so supporters of the Oaxacan rebellion showed up to demand an end to human rights violations in Oaxaca.  Protesters were also demanding an end to the impunity in Oaxaca, where over 23 people died in last year’s uprising–none of whose killers has yet to be tried let alone  convicted. Unfortunately Ulises did not accompany the CONAGO tour of four major US cities. One demonstrator from Houston, Nick Cooper, said, “As a Texas member of the Friends of Brad Will, I am here today to demand justice for Brad, to demand that Ulises Ruiz be removed from office, to demand freedom for all political prisoners, and to demand justice for all the many groups that Brad supported, including the people of Oaxaca.” Omar Angel, a member of La Otra-Austin remarked that, “This meeting ofgovernors is also hypocritical and dishonest–while they are here in the USA talking about immigration reform their policies in their home  states are repressive and neo-liberal–policies that result in an increase in emigration to the north. This is clearly the case in Oaxaca, where the fascist governor Ulises Ruiz has been maintained in power through the actions of the federal government and organizations like the Conference of Mexican Governors that is meeting here today.”

Your Spirit rose

Expanding consciousness

Making a better World

You are always here

POLITICAL DECLARATION OF THE POPULAR ASSEMBLY OF THE PEOPLES OF OAXACA

agosto 14, 2007

 AUGUST 9th, 2007

TO THE MEDIA

TO THE PEOPLE OF OAXACA

AND TO THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD

The past electoral process for the renovation of the local congress is a political thermometer to value the distrust of the people and of the citizenship of the system of parties and the institutions. In front of the APPO call to the vote of punishment in opposition to the PRI, BREAD, PVEM, HONEYCOMB AND ALLIES, today it has been proof that the people of Oaxaca has woken up, and that these people could locate with accuracy to the different electoral actors for their lack of elementary commitments like justice, among many others. The intelligent people also recognized those who act against them, when the solidarity to demmand the exit of the assassin Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO) was more needed. It was not, it nor is the aim of the APPO, to give the vote to the any political party at all; and the abstentionism is a proof of the lack of credibility of those who contended in the ellections, and represents the face of the antidemocracy of the political parties, which are far away from the people’s inspirations, repeating the political control by party bosses and the estates of power. Oaxaca, la cara del fascismo mexicano
Oaxaca, the face of Mexican fascism

The struggle between the popular movement of rebellion and the governement’s actions to totally crush it is at a critical point. I believe the situation is extremely dangerous for many oaxaqueños. Four days ago the governments (Oaxaca State, Mexican Federal, and I’m sure, fully backed by the United States) planned and executed a successful provocation followed by a savage attack on civilians. The resulting deaths, ferocious beatings, jailings, torture, etc., are by now well documented.
